Verse 2 of 5

The One Who Lives the Guru's Word Holds the Name Within

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਮਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
satgur kee jis no mat aavai so satgur maahi samaanaa.
One who accepts the wisdom of the True Guru's Teachings, is absorbed into the True Guru.
ih banee jo jee-ahu jaanai tis antar ravai har naamaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Lord's Name abides deep within the nucleus of one who realizes the Bani of the Guru's Word within his soul. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Whoever takes in the Guru's wisdom melts right into the Guru.

Whoever knows this Bani deep in their own heart has the Naam flowing through their very center.

The Name lives inside the one who does not just hear the teaching but lives it.
The deeper layer

When the Guru's word lives in your heart, the Naam lives there too.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad.

Satgur kee jis no mat aavai so satgur maahi samaanaa means whoever takes in the True Guru's wisdom melts into the Guru, like sugar into water.

Ih banee jo jee-ahu jaanai means whoever knows this banee, the Guru's word, from deep inside. Jee-o means the soul. Tis antar ravai har naamaa means the Name of the One flows through that person's center.

Knowing "from the soul" means living it, not just agreeing with it. Japji Sahib calls this mannai, taking the Word to heart. Think of the difference between reading a recipe and actually cooking the meal. Once you have cooked it, the recipe lives in your hands. The Name becomes a presence inside you, not just an idea.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between knowing a good idea and living it?
