Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am devoted to my Guru; I would give myself for the Guru's feet.

Looking toward the Guru and singing the One's praises, I am filled with joy, peace and delight.

Joy can rise simply from where you turn your attention.
The deeper layer

Thanks to the Guru fills the heart, and joy rises from simply turning toward the Guru.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad.

Balihaaree gur aapnay — I give myself to my Guru. Balihaaree means "I would give anything for you." It shows deep thanks to the teaching that woke us up.

Anad sookh mangal banay — joy, peace, and gladness come. Paykhat gun gaa-o — just from looking toward the Guru and singing the One's praises.

Think of turning your face toward the sun on a cold day. You do nothing else. The warmth just comes. Joy rises the same way, simply from looking and singing.

A Question to Sit With

What lifts your mood just by looking toward it?
