Verse 1 of 3

My Prayer Was Heard

ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
bilaaval mehlaa 5.
Bilaaval, Fifth Mehl:
ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਦਾਤਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਹੋਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
ardaas sunee daataar parabh ho-ay kirpaal.
God, the Great Giver, has become merciful; He has listened to my prayer.
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਆ ਅਪਨਾ ਸੇਵਕੋ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
raakh lee-aa apnaa sayvko mukh nindak chhaar. ||1||
He has saved His servant, and put ashes into the mouth of the slanderer. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Great Giver heard my prayer and answered with kindness.

The One kept me safe — and the harsh words others aimed at me simply came to nothing.

Ill-will loses its power when you are held.
The deeper layer

ardaas sunee daataar prabh, ho-ay kirpaal — the Giver hears the prayer and turns kind; raakh lee-aa apnaa sayvko — the servant is kept safe. The slanderer's harsh words, pictured in the old image of ashes in the mouth, simply come to nothing.

A Question to Sit With

How do you steady yourself when someone speaks unkindly about you?
