Bilaaval, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੇ ਜਿਨ ਬਿਸਰਿਆ ਜੀਵਨ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
mar mar janmay jin bisri-aa jeevan kaa daataa.
Those who forget the Giver of life, die, over and over again, only to be reborn and die.

paarbarahm jan sayvi-aa an-din rang raataa. ||1||
The humble servant of the Supreme Lord God serves Him; night and day, he remains imbued with His Love. ||1||

In plain words

When you forget the One who gave you your very life, living starts to feel hollow and restless, going in circles.

But hold the Giver close, and your days fill with color — soaked in love, morning and night.

Remember who gave you your life, and your days fill with color.
The deeper layer

Remembering the One who gave us life fills the days with color.

Mar mar janmay jin bisri-aa jeevan kaa daataa — those who forget the Giver of life die and are born, again and again. That cycle stands for a life going round in circles, hollow and restless. It is a picture of forgetting, not a threat.

Paarbarahm jan sayvi-aa an-din rang raataa — the one who serves the Supreme is soaked in love, day and night. Rang raataa means dyed in color. Think of a white shirt dipped in bright dye. Once the color soaks in, the whole cloth glows.

A Question to Sit With

What are you most thankful to simply be alive for?
