Sikhism·Raag Devgandhaari·Shabad 10
Verse 2 of 3

O my mind, chant forever the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.

ਜਹ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਤਹੀ ਸਮਾਇਓ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਨੀ ਤਬਹੂੰ ॥
jeh te upajio tahee samaio ieh bidh jaanee tabahoo(n) ||
He is absorbed into the One from which he originated, when he understands the Way.
ਜਹਾ ਜਹਾ ਇਹ ਦੇਹੀ ਧਾਰੀ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕਬਹੂੰ ॥੧॥
jahaa jahaa ieh dhehee dhaaree rahan na paio kabahoo(n) ||1||
Wherever this body was fashioned, it was not allowed to remain there. ||1||

In plain words

He merges back into the One he came from, once he understands the way.

Wherever this body was formed, it was never meant to stay there for good.

You came from the One and you return to it — and nothing here was ever meant to be held onto forever, which lets you hold it gently.
The deeper layer

Two quiet truths sit here. First, the drop returns to the ocean it came from — the soul "merges into the One from which it originated". This is the homecoming the whole raag longs toward. Second, a gentle memento: "wherever the body was formed, it wasn't allowed to stay." Nothing physical is a permanent address. The body is a temporary dwelling, not a home. This is not morbid; it lightens the grip of clinging. If nothing here is meant to be held forever, you can love it freely and let it move through your open hands rather than your clenched ones.

A Question to Sit With

If nothing here lasts forever, does that make it less precious or more precious to you?
