In plain words

From the very beginning and through all the ages, the humble devotees have been your own; in a corrupt world, you are their support.

Nanak longs for the dust of such humble ones' feet; the One beyond all is the Giver of everything.

In every age, even corrupt ones, the same quiet support has held the hearts that turn toward it. That steadiness has never once failed.
The deeper layer

The verse sets the devotees in deep time — "since the very beginning, throughout the ages" — as if to say: this is not a new or fragile thing; the One has always been the support of those who turn to it, in every era including this "world of corruption." There is reassurance in that continuity. Whatever the times, the same support has held the same kind of hearts. And Guru Arjan places himself not among the great but among those who "long for the dust of the feet" of the humble devotees — wanting to be near the lowly-and-luminous rather than the mighty. The Giver of all is found in that company.

A Question to Sit With

Does it comfort you to know that in every era, people have found the same support you're looking for?
