Sikhism·Raag Devgandhaari·Shabad 32
Verse 2 of 2

God, this is my heart's desire:

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਨਿਤ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
saas saas simarau prabh apunaa sa(n)tasa(n)g nit raheeaai ||
With each and every breath, I meditate in remembrance on my God; I live continually in the Society of the Saints.
ਏਕੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਮੋਰਾ ਅਨਦੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥੨॥੨੬॥
ek adhaar naam dhan moraa anadh naanak ih laheeaai ||2||26||
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my only support and wealth; O Nanak, from this, I obtain bliss. ||2||26||

In plain words

With every single breath I remember my One; I live always in the company of the good.

The Name is my only support and wealth; from it, Nanak, I find joy.

When remembering the One rides on your very breath, and the Name is the only wealth you really count on, you find a joy that doesn't rise and fall with your circumstances.
The deeper layer

"With each and every breath" — the remembrance is measured in breaths, the most continuous unit of a life. This is simran woven into respiration itself: not a practice you do and stop, but one that rides on the breath, ceaseless as breathing. And the declaration of what he owns: "the Name is my only support and wealth." Everything else — possessions, status, security — is set aside as secondary; the one real holding is the Name. From this single wealth comes anand, the deep joy that does not depend on circumstances. Own nothing but the Name, and you own the one thing that pays in unshakeable joy.

A Question to Sit With

What's a kind of happiness that doesn't disappear when things go wrong? Where might it come from?
