Just as a wildfire in the forest, out of control, serves no purpose,
so, without the teacher, one cannot reach the door of the One.
Join the company of the good and let go of your ego; Nanak says, this is how the supreme treasure is found.
The image is vivid: an uncontrolled forest fire "serves no purpose" — it burns and burns and produces nothing but destruction. So too, Guru Arjan says, is spiritual energy without the teacher: lots of heat, lots of activity, going nowhere useful. The wandering seeking of the previous verse is exactly this uncontrolled fire — passionate but purposeless. What channels it is the teacher and the Sangat, and what the channeling requires is letting go of ego (haumai). The verse ends with the whole method in one breath: good company + released ego = the supreme treasure. All the raag's teaching compresses here: you don't find the treasure by burning harder; you find it by being guided, in good company, with the ego set down.
Have you ever put lots of energy into something but gotten nowhere because it had no direction? What gives energy a useful direction?
