O mother, whatever is to be, shall be.

Sometimes he blossoms in bliss, while at other times, he suffers in mourning. Sometimes he laughs, and sometimes he weeps.

Sometimes he is filled with the filth of ego, while at other times, he washes it off in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||

In plain words

Sometimes he blooms with joy, and sometimes he grieves. Sometimes he laughs, and sometimes he weeps.

Sometimes he is covered in the grime of ego. Sometimes he washes it clean in the company of the good.

Life swings — joy then grief, laughing then crying — and none of it is the final word. Good company helps wash you clean again.
The deeper layer

This one says: happy and sad days take turns, and none of them lasts forever.

kab hasano kab roieeaai — sometimes laughing, sometimes crying. Joy and grief take turns. Life really does swing like this, and Gurbani never pretends it doesn't.

The second line adds the weather inside us. Sometimes the ego, the "me first" voice, covers us in grime. Sometimes good company washes us clean. That is the Saadh Sangat, the company of good people who lift you up.

The key thing is that no feeling is final. The one who laughs will cry, and then laugh again. It's like the weather over a week: sunny Monday, rainy Wednesday, sunny again by Friday. Knowing this makes you steady. You don't cling to the good days, and you don't sink in the hard ones. You have seen them both come and go.

A Question to Sit With

When you're in a low moment, does it help to remember that it will change? Where does the churning finally settle?
