Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is one reality behind everything. Its Name is Truth, and it is the Maker of all, real and awake.
It has no fear in it and no hate in it. It is never born and never dies; it simply is.
You come to know it by the Guru's grace, the moment you stop blocking it out.
Sometimes my heart feels afraid, and I wonder who I could even tell. So I turn to the One who lifts my worries away, the Giver who has been giving forever and is giving still.
A frightened heart asks who to turn to, and the answer comes right away: the Giver.
This raag, a musical mood with its own set of songs, begins with the Mool Mantar. These are the same opening words that begin all of Gurbani, the Guru's Word. They say there is one true reality. It has no fear and no hate. It is beyond time, never born, and exists by itself. We come to know it through grace.
Then comes a small, honest cry. Jee-o darat hai aapnaa kai si-o karee pukaar — my soul is afraid; who can I call out to? It is like a child waking from a bad dream in the dark. The answer comes at once: dookh visaaran, the One who takes sorrow away, sadaa sadaa daataar, the Giver forever and ever.
The name Dhanaasaree carries the sense of wealth. So it fits that this raag opens by pointing to the one wealth that answers fear.
When you feel afraid, who or what helps you feel safe again?
