Listening Carries Me Across

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅੰਤਿ ਛਡਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥
an-din saahib sayvee-ai ant chhadaa-ay so-ay.
Night and day, I serve my Lord and Master; He shall save me in the end.
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
sun sun mayree kaamnee paar utaaraa ho-ay. ||2||
Hearing and listening, O my dear sister, I have crossed over. ||2||

In plain words

Night and day I keep the One close. In the end, I trust I will be carried safely over.

And how do I cross? By listening, deeply, again and again, until I find I have already reached the other side.

Deep listening, kept up patiently, carries you across.
The deeper layer

Keep listening, day after day, and it carries you across.

An-din saahib sayvee-ai means serve the One night and day. Ant chhadaa-ay so-ay — and in the end, the One sets you free. Crossing over, paar utaaraa, is one of Gurbani's oldest pictures. Life is a wide river, and the One is the boat.

Look at how the crossing happens: sun sun, hearing and listening. This is suniai, deep listening. It is more than letting sound reach your ears. It is like listening to a song again and again until you know every word by heart. That kind of attention quietly carries a person over.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you understood only after listening to it many times?
