O Merciful Lord, Your Name carries me across.
ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sad kurbaanai jaa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I am forever a sacrifice to You. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O kind One, Your Name carries me across the water. And I give myself to You, again and again, with my whole heart.

The Name itself is the boat that carries you over.
The deeper layer

Kindness itself is the boat that gets us over.

This is a second Rahao, a second "pause" line, inside the same shabad. That is unusual. This hymn has several pause lines, and each verse leans on its own.

Da-i-aal means merciful, kind. Da-i-aal tayrai naam taraa — kind One, through Your Name I cross over. Sad kurbaanai jaa-o means "I am forever a sacrifice to You." That is Gurbani's way of saying complete love. It means giving your whole heart, holding nothing back, the way you cheer for your best friend with everything you have.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone you would give your whole heart to help?
