Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without You, Beloved, I could not even be. So give me this one gift: to stay close to Your Name.

There is no one else I could ever go to and pour out my whole heart.

The one thing worth asking for is to stay close to what you love most.
The deeper layer

The heart asks for one gift only: to stay close to the Beloved.

This is another Rahao, a "pause" line. Tudh baajh pi-aaray kayv rahaa — without You, Beloved, how could I live?

The prayer does not ask for comfort or a reward. It asks for vadi-aa-ee, greatness, of one special kind: jit naam tayray laag rahaaN, that I stay attached to Your Name. Think of a phone that always finds its way back to the charger. The Beloved is the only place the heart goes home to, the only one it can truly talk to.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one gift, what would it be?
