In the Sangat the One Comes to Live in the Heart

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
santsangat raam ridai basaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
In the Society of the Saints, the Lord dwells within the heart. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In the Sangat, the One comes to live in my heart.

The One the great sages couldn't reach comes to live in a heart kept in the Sangat.
The deeper layer

The One comes to live in your heart when you spend time in the Sangat.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Santsangat raam ridai basaa-ee: in the santsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — Raam settles into the heart. Raam here means the formless One who lives in everything.

Great sages, gods and holy books could not reach the One. The answer to all of them is simple: being together. Think of a campfire. One log alone goes cold, but logs side by side keep each other burning.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who make it easier for you to be your best self?
