Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In the beginning there was only the One. From the One came the whole changing world.

All of it belongs to the One. In the One's garden we all dance, like water in the pots of a water-wheel, rising and dipping, around and around.

Everything came from the One, belongs to the One, and dances in the One's garden.
The deeper layer

Everything comes from the One, and we all move in the One's garden.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. First there was only the Primal Being, the One before everything. Everything else came from that One. So the One is the single source of all.

Har kaa baagraa naachai pinDhee meh saagraa — the world is the One's baag, garden, and life moves like water in the pinDhee, the clay pots on a Persian water-wheel. That is an old wheel that lifts water from a well. Its pots dip down, fill up, rise, and tip out, around and around. Like the seats on a Ferris wheel, each one takes its turn at the top and the bottom, all moved by the same turning.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to think that you and everything else came from the same source?
