Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Serving the Guru, you gain the treasure of the Naam. Lit up inside, you keep the Naam in mind.
This love for the One runs deep, like the love of a fully devoted heart. A life adorned with peace rests in the One.
But no one finds the One through pride. Wandering from the Root, a life is spent for nothing.
Deep love, not pride, brings you close to the One.
This part holds the Rahao, the "pause" line and center of the shabad, with the second verse. The pause line says gur sayvaa tay har naam Dhan paavai — serving the Guru, you gain the wealth of the Name. Then antar pargaas: you are lit up inside.
The verse compares the soul's love for the One to a heart fully given in love. It uses the old picture of a bride's love for her husband. Then comes a clear warning. Ha-umai vich prabh ko-ay na paa-ay — no one finds the One through haumai, the ego, the "me first" voice inside. Moolhu bhulaa — wandering away from the Root, a life is wasted. It is like a leaf that thinks it can grow without the tree.
What is something you love so deeply that it changes how you live?
