Your Name is the water, and Your Name is the sandalwood. The chanting of Your Name is the grinding of the sandalwood. I take it and offer all this to You. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Your Name is the mat I sit on and the stone where I grind the sweet-smelling sandalwood. Your Name is the fragrance I sprinkle as a gift to You.

Your Name is the water, and Your Name is the sandalwood too. When I say Your Name, that very saying is the grinding — and I lift the whole sweet offering up to You.

When the heart is full of the One, every ordinary thing becomes an offering.
The deeper layer

Every item on the worship tray turns out to be the Name.

Ravi Daas goes through the tray one thing at a time. Aasno is the mat he sits on. Ursaa is the stone for grinding sandalwood. Kaysro is saffron, sprinkled as an offering. Chandno is the sandalwood itself. Every one of them is the Name.

Even the grinding of the sweet paste is the Name. Ghas japay naam — saying Your Name is the grinding. The ceremony is kept, and it is filled from the inside with remembrance, like a lantern that finally gets its flame.

A Question to Sit With

Can an everyday action become a kind of offering, depending on how you do it?
