Your Name Is My Worship

ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਆਰਤੀ ਮਜਨੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
naam tayro aartee majan muraaray.
Your Name, Lord, is my adoration and cleansing bath.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਗਲ ਪਾਸਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har kay naam bin jhoothay sagal paasaaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the Name of the Lord, all ostentatious displays are useless. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Your Name, the Naam, is my worship with lamps and my holy bath, O Lord.

Without the Naam, every grand show is empty.

Keeping the One in mind is the whole of worship.
The deeper layer

For Ravi Daas, the Name itself is the whole ceremony.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Naam tayro aartee majan muraaray — Your Name is my aartee, the worship with lamps, and my majan, the holy bath. Muraaray is a name for the One.

So the ceremony of lights moves from the tray into the heart. Har kay naam bin jhoothay sagal paasaaray — without the Name, all outer show is hollow. It is like a beautiful gift box with nothing inside. What fills the box is the living Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that looks impressive on the outside but can feel empty on the inside?
