Verse 3 of 3

Love Grows in the Sangat

saaDhsangat binaa bhaa-o nahee oopjai bhaav bin bhagat nahee ho-ay tayree.
Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, love for the Lord does not well up; without this love, Your devotional worship cannot be performed.
kahai ravidaas ik bayntee har si-o paij raakho raajaa raam mayree. ||2||2||
Ravi Daas offers this one prayer unto the Lord: please preserve and protect my honor, O Lord, my King. ||2||2||

In plain words

Love for You springs up in the Sangat, and that love is what makes devotion to You possible.

And once that love is alive, everything else follows. So here is my one small prayer: stay close, and keep me safe. I trust You to hold my honor like Your own.

The Sangat is where love for the One first takes root.
The deeper layer

Love for the One grows best in the Sangat.

SaaDhsangat binaa bhaa-o nahee oopjai — love sprouts in saaDhsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — and it needs the Sangat to grow. Bhaav bin bhagat nahee — and that love is what makes true devotion possible. Think of a seedling. It grows best in a garden, with others around to water it.

One prayer closes it all: paij raakho — keep my honor safe. It is the prayer of someone who has handed his whole standing over to the One. It is like a child who trusts a parent to speak up for them.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who make it easier for your best self to grow?
