A Love That Never Shrinks

ਮੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਘਟੈ ॥
mayree pareet gobind si-o jin ghatai.
My love for the Lord of the Universe does not decrease.

mai ta-o mol mahgee la-ee jee-a satai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I paid for it dearly, in exchange for my soul. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My love for the One who cares for the world will never grow smaller.

I bought it at a high price. I gave my whole self for it, and it was worth every bit.

The love worth most is the one you give your whole self to.
The deeper layer

This love is the most precious thing I own, and I paid for it with my whole self.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Mayree pareet gobind si-o jin ghatai — may my love for the One never grow smaller. Gobind is a name for the One who cares for the world.

Mai ta-o mol mahgee la-ee jee-a satai — I bought it at a high price, and the price was my own self. Love for the One costs a lot. That is not a punishment. It is because it asks for your whole heart, the way a best friendship asks for real time and care.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so valuable to you that you would give your whole heart for it?
