My Mind the Bumble-Bee

chit simran kara-o nain avilokano sarvan baanee sujas poor raakha-o.
In my consciousness, I remember You in meditation; with my eyes, I behold You; I fill my ears with the Word of Your Bani, and Your Sublime Praise.
man so maDhukar kara-o charan hirday Dhara-o rasan amrit raam naam bhaakha-o. ||1||
My mind is the bumble bee; I enshrine Your feet within my heart, and with my tongue, I chant the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

With my thoughts I keep You close. With my eyes I look for You everywhere. My ears fill up with the words that praise You, until there is no room left for noise.

My mind is like a little bumble-bee that will not leave the flower — it rests at Your feet and stays. And my tongue keeps saying Your sweet Name, like tasting something that never runs out.

Every part of you can be pointed toward the One at once.
The deeper layer

Ravi Daas turns every sense toward the One at once.

Chit simran kara-o — in my thoughts, I remember You. Nain avilokano — with my eyes, I look at You. My ears fill with Your praise. My tongue speaks amrit raam naam, the Name that is sweet like nectar.

Then comes a picture. Man so maDhukar kara-o — I make my mind a maDhukar, a bumblebee. A bee is drawn to a flower's nectar and cannot pull away. Here devotion is the whole body paying attention, more than any single act. It is like being lost in a favorite game, with eyes, ears and hands all in it.

A Question to Sit With

If your attention were a bumble-bee, what flower does it keep returning to?
