Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I bring incense, lamps, and warm ghee, and I arrange my little ceremony of lights for You. Everything I have, I set out with love.

I would give my whole self to You — the One who holds all beauty and plenty. The offering is just my way of saying so.

An offering means most when it stands for the whole heart behind it.
The deeper layer

Sain, a saint who worked as a barber, brings lamps to the One. The gift he brings is himself.

Dhoop deep gharit saaj aartee — with incense, lamps and ghee, I set out the aartee. An aartee is worship done by waving a tray of little lamps. Ghee is the clarified butter that keeps the flames burning.

Then Sain says vaarnay jaa-o — I give myself to You. He calls the One kamlaa patee, the Lord of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty. The tray of lamps is a picture of a bigger gift, the gift of the whole self. It is like a birthday card. The card is nice, but the love behind it is the real present. Like Ravi Daas, Sain keeps the ceremony and finds its meaning in love.

A Question to Sit With

What small gift have you given that meant 'I give you all of me'?
