The Treasure Is Within

ਕਾਇਆ ਬਹੁ ਖੰਡ ਖੋਜਤੇ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
kaa-i-aa baho khand khojtay nav niDh paa-ee.
I searched throughout many realms, but I found the nine treasures within the body.
ਨਾ ਕਛੁ ਆਇਬੋ ਨਾ ਕਛੁ ਜਾਇਬੋ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਦੁਹਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naa kachh aa-ibo naa kachh jaa-ibo raam kee duhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Nothing comes, and nothing goes; I pray to the Lord for Mercy. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I searched through many lands, and I found the nine treasures inside my own body.

Nothing comes, and nothing goes. I pray to the One for mercy.

The long search often ends by finding what was here all along.
The deeper layer

After searching everywhere, I found the treasure inside.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Kaa-i-aa baho khand khojtay nav niDh paa-ee — I searched many lands and found the nav niDh, the nine treasures, in the body. The nine treasures are an old way of saying every kind of wealth.

Naa kachh aa-ibo naa kachh jaa-ibo — nothing comes, nothing goes. The treasure was never somewhere else, so nothing needs to arrive. The search ends where it began. It is like a treasure hunt whose last clue says, "Look in your own pocket."

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever searched hard for something that turned out to be close by the whole time?
