How Duality Clouds The World

Dhanaasree mehlaa 3 teejaa.
Dhanaasaree, Third Mehl:
jag mailaa mailo ho-ay jaa-ay.
The world is polluted, and those in the world become polluted as well.
aavai jaa-ay doojai lobhaa-ay.
In attachment to duality, it comes and goes.
doojai bhaa-ay sabh paraj vigo-ee.
This love of duality has ruined the entire world.
manmukh chotaa khaa-ay apunee pat kho-ee. ||1||
The self-willed manmukh suffers punishment, and forfeits his honor. ||1||

In plain words

When the world is clouded, those caught up in it get clouded too.

Chasing two-ness, the heart keeps coming and going restlessly. This love of separateness has worn the whole world down, and the self-led heart takes knocks and loses its dignity.

Feeling cut off from everything else is what wears the heart down.
The deeper layer

When we feel separate from the One, the world looks cloudy, and so do we.

Jag mailaa mailo ho-ay jaa-ay — the world is clouded, and whoever is caught up in it gets clouded too. Think of a window covered in dust. Everything you see through it looks gray.

The dust has a name: doojaa, "two-ness." It is the feeling of being separate from the One and from each other. Pulled by it, a person keeps coming and going, restless. This love of separateness wears the whole world down.

The last line speaks of the manmukh, the self-led person who faces only their own wants. It says such a person takes hard knocks and loses honor. This describes what happens. It is not a sentence handed down. It is a hurt that can heal.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most separate from others, and when do you feel most connected?
