The Rare Buyer Of The True Name

ਸਾਚੇ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
saachay kaa gaahak virlaa ko jaan.
Know that one who purchases the True Name is very rare.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
gur kai sabad aap pachhaan.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he comes to understand himself.
ਸਾਚੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
saachee raas saachaa vaapaar.
True is his capital, and true is his trade.
ਸੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੩॥
so Dhan purakh jis naam pi-aar. ||3||
Blessed is that person, who loves the Naam. ||3||

In plain words

Know that the one who comes to buy the True Name is very rare.

Through the Guru's Word, that one comes to understand their own self. Their capital is true and their trade is true; blessed is the one who loves the Name.

The wisest trade you can make is to spend your life on what is real.
The deeper layer

The best trade a life can make is to invest in what is real.

Saachay kaa gaahak virlaa ko jaan — rare is the customer who comes to buy the True Name. Dhanaasaree often uses pictures of shops, money, and trade, since the raag's name carries the sense of wealth. Picture a busy market. Crowds gather at the flashy stalls. Only a few stop at the stall selling what truly lasts.

That rare buyer, through gur kai sabad, the Guru's Word, gains aap pachhaan, knowing who they really are. Their savings are true, and their trade is true. So Dhan purakh jis naam pi-aar — blessed is the one who loves the Name.

A Question to Sit With

If your days were coins, what would be worth spending them on?
