Listening To Gurbani Washes The Heart

ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
gurbaanee sun mail gavaa-ay.
Listening to the Word of Gurbani, filth is washed off,
ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sehjay har naam man vasaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and they naturally enshrine the Lord's Name in their minds. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Listening deeply to Gurbani washes away whatever clouds the heart.

And, in natural ease, the Naam comes to live within.

Deep listening quietly washes the heart clean.
The deeper layer

Listening deeply to the Guru's Word washes the heart clean.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Gurbaanee sun mail gavaa-ay — listening to Gurbani, the Guru's Word, washes off the dirt. Sehjay har naam man vasaa-ay — in Sahaj, natural ease, the Name comes to live inside.

This is suniai, deep listening, as a kind of washing. You do not strain or push. You let the Word soak in, the way rain slowly rinses the dust off a car, until the heart is clear.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can listen to that leaves you feeling clearer and calmer?
