Colored by the Name, Free and Glad

Listening to the sermon of the Lord, Har, Har, their minds are pleased; through Guru's Instruction, they enshrine love for the Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Soaked through with the Naam, they walk light and free.

They listen to the story of the One, it gladdens their hearts, and through the teaching their love holds fast.

Listen deeply enough and love takes hold on its own.
The deeper layer

Love for the One makes a person light and free.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Har kai naam rataa bairaagee — dyed in the Name, they are free. Bairaagee means someone not tied down by things. Think of a white shirt dipped in dye. Every thread takes the color.

Har har kathaa sunee man bhaa-ee — hearing the One's story makes the heart glad. Then gurmat har liv laagee — through the Guru's teaching, love takes hold. Liv means steady, loving attention.

Listening is the doorway here. This is suniai, deep listening, the same deep listening Japji Sahib sings about. You listen closely, and love grows on its own.

A Question to Sit With

What is a story you love hearing again and again? What does it do to your heart?
