The One Is the Only Rank We Need

sant janaa kee jaat har su-aamee tumH thaakur ham saaNgee.
God, the Lord and Master, is the caste and social status of His humble Saints. You are the Lord and Master; I am just Your puppet.
ਜੈਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਮ ਤੈਸੇ ਬੁਲਗ ਬੁਲਾਗੀ ॥੨॥
jaisee mat dayvhu har su-aamee ham taisay bulag bulaagee. ||2||
As is the understanding You bless us with, so are the words we speak. ||2||

In plain words

For the people turned toward the One, the One is their whole family, their standing, their name.

I am like a small puppet in Your hands — the understanding You give me is the very understanding I speak from.

Your true rank is not where you were born but where your heart belongs.
The deeper layer

Your worth comes from belonging to the One, not from the family you were born into.

Sant janaa kee jaat har — the One is the jaat of the good. Jaat means caste, the rank a family was given by birth. In Guru Ram Das's time, people were sorted by caste, and the sorting was very strict. This line quietly takes that ladder away. Your place comes from whom you belong to.

Then comes a humble bow. Jaisee mat dayvhu har su-aamee ham taisay bulag bulaagee — the understanding You give us is what we speak. It is like a puppet that moves only as the hands above it move. Even our good words are a gift of grace.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been treated as ‘less’ unfairly? What would a fairer world have said instead?
