The True Guru is the Lord's Saint, the True Being, who chants the Bani of the Lord, Har, Har.

Whoever chants it, and listens to it, is liberated; I am forever a sacrifice to him. ||1||

In plain words

The true teacher, the One's own saint, speaks the Word of the One.

Whoever says it and whoever hears it is set free — and I give myself gladly to such a one.

Words that are true set free both the one who speaks and the one who hears.
The deeper layer

The true teacher speaks the One's Word, and anyone who says it or hears it is set free.

Jo bolai har har baanee — the teacher speaks the bani, the Word of the One. Jo jo kahai sunai so muktaa — whoever says it, and whoever hears it, is set free. So there are two doors here: speaking and listening. The listening meant is suniai, deep listening, where you take it all in.

Think of a song you love. It lifts you when you sing it. It lifts you when a friend sings it to you. This pair of doors runs through the whole shabad.

Ham tis kai sad kurbaanee — I give myself to that one forever. It is warm admiration. The same loving note opens so many shabads in this raag.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever heard someone say something so true it changed how you felt right away?
