ਹਮ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਅੰਧ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਰਾਤੇ ਕਿਉ ਚਾਲਹ ਗੁਰ ਚਾਲੀ ॥

I am blind, totally blind, entangled in corruption and poison. How can I walk on the Guru's Path?
ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹਮ ਲਾਵੈ ਆਪਨ ਪਾਲੀ ॥੧॥

If the True Guru, the Giver of peace, shows His kindness, He attaches us to the hem of His robe. ||1||

In plain words

Sometimes I feel like I cannot see the way at all, tangled up in things that pull me off track.

But if the teacher — the giver of peace — is kind, a hand reaches out and steadies me onto the path.

You do not have to see the whole path — just take the hand that steadies you.
The deeper layer

Sometimes we cannot see the way, and a kind teacher takes our hand.

Ham anDhulay anDh — I am blind, totally blind. It means not being able to see the path. It is a place to come out of, not a name to be ashamed of.

Bikhai bikh raatay — soaked in what harms. That is being caught in habits that pull us off track. It is like getting lost scrolling on a phone when you meant to do homework.

Then grace does the rescuing. Satgur da-i-aa karay... ham laavai aapan paalee — when the true teacher is kind, he fastens us to the hem of his robe. Think of a small child holding a parent's coat in a crowd. Holding on, you stay on the path.

A Question to Sit With

When you cannot see your way forward, whose hand do you reach for?
