Keep the One in mind, my heart, and join the Sangat, my friend.
Then joy stays with you day and night as you sing the One's praise.
When the One's kind glance fell on me, an eagerness woke up inside. Keeping the Naam in mind, I was set free. Keep my honor, my Master, for I have come to Your shelter.
The One's kindness comes first, and then our effort wakes up.
This holds the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Mil sangat saaDhoo meet — friend, come and join the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Sadaa anand hovai din raatee har keerat kar banvaaree — there is lasting joy, anand, day and night, in singing the One's praise. Keerat means songs of praise.
Then comes the turn: har har karee darisat tab bha-i-o man udam. When the One looks with kindness, then eagerness, udam, wakes up in the mind. The order matters. Grace comes first and stirs our will. It is like sunlight on a seed. The sun shines first, and then the seed starts to push up.
Has someone believing in you ever made you suddenly want to try harder?
