Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
My mind, say the Naam of the One. Singing the One's praise is the finest work there is.
Master, I give myself, always, to everyone who sings and hears Your praise.
I take Your shelter; whatever You give me, I gladly accept. My one longing is to remember You.
Singing the One's praise is the finest work there is, and whatever the One gives is enough.
This verse holds the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Jap man raamai naam har jas ootam kaam — remember the Name, my mind; praising the One is the finest work. So singing counts as real work. It is the work of the heart, like practicing a song you love until it sings itself.
Jo tum dayh so-ee ha-o paa-o — whatever You give, I accept. This is sahaj, quiet calm and contentment. It means trusting the flow of life instead of grabbing for more. Think of opening a gift and saying thank you, whatever is inside.
What is a ‘small’ thing you do that makes the world around you better?
