Dhanaasree mehlaa 4.
Dhanaasaree, Fourth Mehl:
ਇਛਾ ਪੂਰਕੁ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਕਾਮਧੇਨਾ ॥
ichhaa poorak sarab sukh-daata har jaa kai vas hai kaamDhaynaa.
The Lord is the Fulfiller of desires, the Giver of total peace; the Kaamadhaynaa, the wish-fulfilling cow, is in His power.
so aisaa har Dhi-aa-ee-ai mayray jee-arhay taa sarab sukh paavahi mayray manaa. ||1||
So meditate on such a Lord, O my soul. Then, you shall obtain total peace, O my mind. ||1||

In plain words

The One fills every true need and gives complete peace; even the wish-granting wonder of the old stories is within its care.

So keep such a One in mind, my heart, and you will find peace, all the way through.

The source of every good thing is worth keeping closest of all.
The deeper layer

The One gives every good thing, so keep the One closest of all.

Ichhaa poorak sarab sukh-daata — the One fulfills wishes and gives total peace. KaamDhaynaa, the wish-granting cow of the old stories, appears here, named with respect. Even the source of every wished-for gift belongs to the One. Wishes are like snacks; the One is the whole kitchen they come from.

Then the voice turns inward. Mayray jee-arhay — O my soul. It speaks to its own heart with a simple invitation. Remember the One, and be at peace.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for one thing and get it, would you ask for the thing — or for the giver?
