Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Keep the True Name in mind, my heart, always the True Name.
Here and everywhere your face will be bright, as you steadily remember the One who is pure and clear.
Wherever the One is remembered, trouble packs up and leaves. It is great good luck to remember the One.
The Guru gave me this understanding: by remembering the One, we cross safely over the scary ocean of the world.
Keep the True Name close, and your face will shine.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Jap man sat naam sadaa sat naam — my heart, keep the Sat Naam, the True Name, always. The promise is bright. Halat palat mukh oojal — your face will be radiant, here and beyond. Oojal means bright and shining.
Then comes a picture of a place. Jah har simran bha-i-aa tah upaaDh gat keenee — wherever the One is remembered, trouble leaves. Simran means remembering the One. UpaaDh means trouble. It is like opening the windows in a stuffy room. The staleness just drifts out.
What is a small habit that, when you keep it up, makes your whole day go better?
