The Treasure Living in the Heart

ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥
gun niDhaan rid bheetar vasi-aa taa dookh bharam bha-o bhaagaa.
The Lord, the treasure of virtue, abides deep within the heart, and so pain, doubt and fear have been dispelled.
ਭਈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੨॥
bha-ee paraapat vasat agochar raam naam rang laagaa. ||2||
I have obtained the most incomprehensible thing, enshrining love for the Name of the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The treasure of all goodness has come to live deep in my heart, and pain, doubt, and fear have run off.

I have received the most precious thing of all — a love for Your Name that words can barely hold.

When goodness itself lives in your heart, fear and doubt lose their room.
The deeper layer

When goodness lives in the heart, pain, doubt, and fear run away.

gun niDhaan rid bheetar vasi-aa — the treasure of all goodness has come to live deep in the heart. Just by being there, it scatters dookh bharam bha-o: pain, doubt, and fear. It is like switching on a lamp in a dark room. You do not chase the shadows out. They are simply gone.

The treasure is agochar, beyond the reach of the senses. You cannot grab it or hold it in your hand. You can only receive it. What arrives is raam naam rang, the deep color of love for the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is something precious you carry inside you that no one could ever take away?
