Verse 4 of 5

From Worry to Ease, from Fear to Freedom

ਚਿੰਤ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਸੋਚ ਅਸੋਚਾ ਸੋਗੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਥਾਕਾ ॥
chint achintaa soch asochaa sog lobh moh thaakaa.
I was anxious, and now I am free of anxiety; I was worried, and now I am free of worry; my grief, greed and emotional attachments are gone.
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਬਿਬਾਕਾ ॥੩॥
ha-umai rog mitay kirpaa tay jam tay bha-ay bibaakaa. ||3||
By His Grace, I am cured of the disease of egotism, and the Messenger of Death no longer terrifies me. ||3||

In plain words

I used to be anxious — now the anxiety is gone. I used to worry — now the worry has lifted. Sadness, greed, and clinging have all grown quiet.

By grace, the fever of ego has healed, and even death holds no fear for me anymore.

Ego is a fever that heals — and when it cools, even fear of death lets go.
The deeper layer

A worried heart can find calm, and stay there.

chint achintaa soch asochaa — I was anxious, and now I am not; I was worried, and now I am not. Grief, greed, and clinging have all grown still. Think of the moment a hard test is over and your shoulders drop.

Then the verse names ha-umai, the feeling of being a separate, self-centered self. It calls it a rog, an illness. An illness is something that heals. It is not a crime to be judged. And it heals kirpaa tay, by grace.

The last words say the old fear of death has let go. Death is not denied. The fear has simply lost its grip.

A Question to Sit With

What is a worry you carried once that later completely melted away?
