Melted Down, the Gold Is Still Gold

ਓਇ ਜੁ ਬੀਚ ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਬਿਲਾਨੀ ॥

Those things which tore me away from You, Lord, are now gone.

alankaar mil thailee ho-ee hai taa tay kanik vakhaanee. ||3||
When golden ornaments are melted down into a lump, they are still said to be gold. ||3||

In plain words

Whatever once pulled me away from You has faded and gone.

Think of golden bracelets and rings melted back into a single lump — they were always gold, and gold they remain. In just that way, everything that seemed separate was always You.

The many shapes of the world are all one reality, like rings and bracelets that are all just gold.
The deeper layer

Everything, in all its shapes, is the one reality.

First, whatever pulled me away from You is gone. Then comes a picture from a jeweler's shop. alankaar mil thailee ho-ee hai — bracelets and rings are melted together into one lump. taa tay kanik vakhaanee — and we still call it kanik, gold.

The shapes were never anything but the one metal. A ring, a chain, and an earring look different. Melt them down, and it was gold all along. This is a clear picture of Ik Onkar, "there is One." The countless forms around us are all the one reality, shaped differently for a while.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of many different things that are all made of the same one material?
