Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 37
Verse 2 of 4

One Taste, and No Other Hunger Remains

jaa ka-o aa-i-o ayk rasaa. khaan paan aan nahee khuDhi-aa taa kai chit na basaa. rahaa-o.
The desire to eat, to wear new clothes, and all other desires, do not abide in the mind of one who comes to know the subtle essence of the One Lord. ||Pause||
ma-uli-o man tan ho-i-o hari-aa ayk boond jin paa-ee.
The mind and body blossom forth in abundance, when one receives even a drop of this Nectar.
baran na saaka-o ustat taa kee keemat kahan na jaa-ee. ||2||
I cannot express His glory; I cannot describe His worth. ||2||

In plain words

For the one who has tasted the single sweetness of the One, no other craving — for food, for new things, for anything — takes up room in the heart.

Just one drop of it, and mind and body blossom green and alive. Its glory is more than I can say; its worth is beyond any words.

One real taste of the deepest thing can quiet a hundred smaller wants.
The deeper layer

One taste of the One is enough to quiet every other hunger.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. jaa ka-o aa-i-o ayk rasaa — for the one who has tasted the single sweetness of the One, the smaller hungers leave. Wanting food, new clothes, and other things no longer fills the heart.

Then comes a green picture. ma-uli-o man tan ho-i-o hari-aa — mind and body blossom and turn green, like a dry garden after rain. And it takes only ayk boond, a single drop. The blessing is so big that words cannot keep up. The poet gives up trying to describe it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so good that, while you had it, you did not want anything else?
