Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 37
Verse 3 of 4

It Comes on Its Own, Not by Force

ਘਾਲ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਆਇ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ॥
ghaal na mili-o sayv na mili-o mili-o aa-ay achintaa.
We cannot meet the Lord by our own efforts, nor can we meet Him through service; He comes and meets us spontaneously.
jaa ka-o da-i-aa karee mayrai thaakur tin gureh kamaano manntaa. ||3||
One who is blessed by my Lord Master's Grace, practices the Teachings of the Guru's Mantra. ||3||

In plain words

We cannot earn this by hard effort, and we cannot buy it by doing enough — it arrives on its own, freely.

The one my Master touches with kindness lives out the Teacher's word.

Grace arrives on its own, a gift you never had to earn.
The deeper layer

Grace comes on its own, as a gift.

ghaal na mili-o sayv na mili-o mili-o aa-ay achintaa — not by hard work, not by service; the One came and met me when I was not expecting it. This is the heart of grace: it is not a wage. It is like a friend who shows up at your door with a surprise gift. You did not earn it with chores.

The one who receives this kindness then gureh kamaano manntaa — lives out the Teacher's word. But the living comes after the gift. It does not buy the gift.

A Question to Sit With

Has something wonderful ever come to you exactly when you were not chasing it?
