In plain words

Be gentle with me, my dear One.

Give me the kind of understanding that keeps me turned toward You always, forever and ever.

The best thing to ask for is a heart that stays awake to the One.
The deeper layer

The best thing to ask for is a heart that remembers.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It is one clear request: aisee mat deejai — give me such understanding. The prayer does not ask for money or for rescue. It asks for a steady, inner turning toward the One, so that remembering never stops.

It is like asking a coach, not for a trophy, but for the habit of practicing every day.

So this is the humblest prayer and the biggest one at the same time. It asks, not for things, but for the power to stay awake to the One.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for one quality of mind, what would you choose?
