The Teacher Reveals the Whole Game

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਚਲਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
ha-o balihaaree satgur apunay jin ih chalat dikhaa-i-aa.
I am a sacrifice to my True Guru, who has shown me this wondrous play.
ਗੂਝੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਭਗਤ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
goojhee bhaahi jalai sansaaraa bhagat na bi-aapai maa-i-aa. ||4||
The world is being consumed by this hidden fire, but Maya does not cling to the Lord's devotees. ||4||

In plain words

I give my whole self to the Teacher, who let me see through this wondrous game.

A hidden restlessness smoulders through the world, yet it never catches hold of those whose hearts rest in the One.

Once you can see the game clearly, it no longer has the same hold on you.
The deeper layer

Once the Teacher shows you the game, it has less hold on you.

Ha-o balihaaree satgur apunay — I give my whole self in thanks to my True Guru, jin ih chalat dikhaa-i-aa, who showed me this whole play. Seeing it changes everything.

The goojhee bhaahi is a hidden, smouldering fire, the fire of restless wanting. It runs quietly through the world. But bhagat na bi-aapai maa-i-aa — Maya does not cling to the heart that rests in the One.

It is like knowing how a magic trick works. Once you see it, the trick cannot fool you the same way. To see the game is already to be less caught by it.

A Question to Sit With

How does understanding how something works make it less scary or less powerful?
