Verse 3 of 4

Where to Place Your Love, and Where Not

ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਇਨ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
par Dhan par tan par kee nindaa in si-o pareet na laagai.
Others' wealth, others' bodies, and the slander of others - do not attach your love to them.
ਸੰਤਹ ਸੰਗੁ ਸੰਤ ਸੰਭਾਖਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥੨॥
santeh sang sant sambhaakhan har keertan man jaagai. ||2||
Associate with the Saints, speak with the Saints, and keep your mind awake to the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||2||

In plain words

Others' belongings, others' bodies, speaking ill of others — do not let your heart get tangled in these.

Instead, spend your time in the Sangat, talk with the Guru's people, and keep your mind awake with songs of the One's praise.

Keep your heart clear of envy and gossip, and awake with the Sangat and song.
The deeper layer

Where we point our love shapes who we become.

The verse gives two clear steps. First, turn your love away from three tangles. Par Dhan is wanting other people's things. Par tan is wanting other people's bodies, treating a person as something to take. Par kee nindaa is speaking badly of others.

Second, turn your love toward something better. Santeh sang means the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Har keertan means singing praise to the One. It keeps the mind jaagai, awake. Think of a flashlight in a dark room. Whatever you point it at is what you see. This is practical advice for pointing the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you could spend less time on, and one you could spend more time on?
