The Sangat Quiets the Restless Storms

ਗੋਸਟਿ ਭਈ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਮਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
gosat bha-ee saaDh kai sangam kaam kroDh lobh maari-aa.
Talking with the Holy Saints, my sexual desire, anger and greed have been eradicated.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ ਸੰਗੀ ਸਗਲੇ ਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥
simar simar pooran naaraa-in sangee saglay taari-aa. ||1||
Remembering, remembering the Perfect Lord in meditation, I have saved all my companions. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In conversation in the Sangat, the storms of craving, anger, and greed grew still.

Holding the Perfect One in memory again and again, I found that my friends beside me were lifted too.

Peace found in the Sangat spreads to everyone around you.
The deeper layer

The Sangat calms our inner storms, and the calm spreads to others.

gosat bha-ee saaDh kai sangam — I talked and spent time in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. There, three storms grew quiet: kaam, strong craving; kroDh, anger; and lobh, greed.

Then the blessing spreads. sangee saglay taari-aa — all my companions were carried across too. It is like one calm kid in a noisy classroom. Soon the kids nearby calm down too. Peace found in the Sangat does not stay private. It lifts everyone close by.

A Question to Sit With

How does one calm, kind person change the mood of a whole group?
