Twenty-four hours a day, I worship God; Nanak is forever a sacrifice to Him. ||2||18||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Resting in Your shelter, I come alive — You are all-able and full of kindness.

Through every part of the day I turn toward You, and my whole self is grateful, again and again.

Shelter is what lets you come fully alive.
The deeper layer

In the One's shelter, life begins.

Tayree saran pa-i-aa ha-o jeevaaN — in Your shelter, I come alive. Shelter is where life starts, not where it ends. Think of a seed in warm soil. The shelter of the ground is what lets it grow.

Aath pahar means all eight watches, the whole day and night. People once split the day into eight parts called watches. So remembering the One is woven through ordinary hours, the way breathing is. It is part of every hour, not set apart from them.

A Question to Sit With

Where is a place, or who is a person, that feels like a safe shelter to you?
