By myself, I cannot do anything, O my Lord and Master; by Your Grace, please bless me with Your Name. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

O One, please hold me safe.

On my own I cannot manage anything, my Keeper — so in Your kindness, place Your Naam in my heart.

Admitting you cannot do it all alone is the opening through which help arrives.
The deeper layer

Sometimes the truest prayer is simply: please help me, I cannot do this alone.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It is an honest, empty-handed prayer. Ham tay kichhoo na ho-ay — by myself, nothing gets done. It is like a small child holding up both arms to be lifted.

What does the singer ask for? Apunaa naam — Your own Name, the living sense of the One held in the mind. And it is asked kar kirpaa, by Your kindness, as a gift of grace.

A Question to Sit With

When is it a relief to ask someone for help instead of struggling alone?
