Verse 2 of 4

In the Sangat, Sing of the One

saaDhoo sang bhajahu gupaal.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, meditate, vibrate upon the Lord of the world.
I cannot think of any other way; make this effort, and make it in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ||Pause||
aad ant da-i-aal pooran tis binaa nahee ko-ay.
In the beginning, and in the end, there is none other than the perfect, merciful Lord.
janam maran nivaar har jap simar su-aamee so-ay. ||2||
The cycle of birth and death is ended, chanting the Lord's Name, and remembering the Lord Master in meditation. ||2||

In plain words

In the Sangat, let your heart sing of the One who holds the world. I can think of no better way to spend this life.

From the very beginning to the very end there is only the One, gentle and complete. Nothing and no one else stands apart.

The heavy wheel of coming and going grows quiet as you keep the One in mind, remembering the Master with love.

The Sangat and steady remembrance quietly settle the restlessness of a whole life.
The deeper layer

The best way through life is to remember the One, together in the Sangat.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. SaaDhoo sang bhajahu gupaal — in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — sing of the Keeper of the world. There is no better way to spend this life, even in hard times. It is like choosing your team. Friends who are kind and honest make it easier to be your best self.

The verse then says the One is the only reality, from the very beginning to the very end. That One is gentle and complete. Remembering the One quiets janam maran, the wheel of being born and dying, of coming and going.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose company makes you want to be your kindest, truest self?
