Verse 3 of 4

Where the Darkness Lifts

ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਕਥੈ ਸਾਸਤ ਭਗਤ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
bayd simrit kathai saasat bhagat karahi beechaar.
The Vedas, the Simritees, the Shaastras and the Lord's devotees contemplate Him;
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
mukat paa-ee-ai saaDhsangat binas jaa-ay anDhaar. ||3||
liberation is attained in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and the darkness of ignorance is dispelled. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The old scriptures and the wise, and all who love the One, keep turning their thoughts toward Him.

In the Sangat, freedom is found and the fog of not-knowing simply lifts.

Understanding grows brightest in the Sangat, among others who are seeking too.
The deeper layer

Wise people of every kind think about the One, and in the Sangat the darkness lifts.

The verse names the old scriptures one by one: the Vedas, the Simritees and the Shaastras. These are holy books of ancient India. Beside them stand the bhagat, the people who love the One. All of them beechaar — they reflect, and turn their thoughts toward the One.

Freedom is found in saaDhsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. There anDhaar, the darkness of not-knowing, simply fades. It is like a dark room when friends open the curtains together. Freedom comes through shared, humble reflection, rather than sitting alone.

A Question to Sit With

How does talking something over with a good friend help you see it more clearly?
