There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Listen, dear good-hearted friends, to my prayer: without the One, no one is set free.
So, my heart, do only good and gentle deeds — the One is the boat that carries you across, and other tangles won't help you.
Real living is serving the One who holds everything — this is the teaching my teacher gave me.
True living is serving the One, and the One is the boat across.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. sunhu sant pi-aaray bin-o hamaaray jee-o — listen, dear good friends, to my prayer. It opens as a warm call to fellow seekers. The prayer is this: without the One, no one is truly set free.
The verse then says to do only clean, good deeds. The One is the boat that carries you across. Other tangles will not help, like a knotted kite string that gets messier the more you pull. Then comes the whole path in a few words. jeevan dayvaa paarbarahm sayvaa — true living is loving service to Paarbarahm, the Highest One, beyond everything. This is the updays, the teaching, that the Teacher gave as a gift.
What is one small, good deed you could do today that would help someone?
