A Gift That Never Fades

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
Dhanaasree mehlaa 5.
Dhanaasaree, Fifth Mehl:
ਛਡਾਇ ਲੀਓ ਮਹਾ ਬਲੀ ਤੇ ਅਪਨੇ ਚਰਨ ਪਰਾਤਿ ॥
chhadaa-ay lee-o mahaa balee tay apnay charan paraat.
He has saved me from the awful power of Maya, by attaching me to His feet.
ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਓ ਮਨ ਮੰਤਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਜਾਤਿ ॥੧॥
ayk naam dee-o man manntaa binas na kathoo jaat. ||1||
He gave my mind the Mantra of the Naam, the Name of the One Lord, which shall never perish or leave me. ||1||

In plain words

The One pulled me free from the strong pull of illusion — the shiny things that promise everything and hold nothing. The One drew me close instead.

Into my mind was placed the one Name, a gift that never wears out, never breaks, and never leaves.

The one thing given to you that never breaks or fades is the Name within.
The deeper layer

The One pulled me away from things that fade, and gave me something that never fades.

Chhadaa-ay lee-o mahaa balee tay — I was set free from a very strong force. That force is Maya. Maya is not a monster. It is the pull of illusion and clinging: shiny things that promise everything and then let you down. Think of a new game you begged for that feels boring a week later.

Then comes the gift. Ayk naam dee-o — the One gave me the Name. And binas na kathoo jaat: it never wears out and never goes away. Everything Maya offers breaks or fades one day. The Name stays.

A Question to Sit With

What things you love will not last forever — and what inside you might?
