Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I keep my eyes on You, always, dear One.
Be the helper of Your servant. Take my hand and lift me up, my Friend.
My dear One heard my prayer and looked after me like family. So my worries lifted, joy came flooding in, and I hold the One in mind forever and ever.
Keep looking to the One, and the One takes your hand.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Nirkha-o tumree or har neet — I keep my eyes on You, always. It is a steady gaze, like a little child in a crowd who keeps looking back at their parent.
Then the ask: kar geh uDhrahu — take my hand and lift me up.
And the answer comes. Khasmaanaa kar aap — the One looks after me like a caretaker, almost like family. So the shabad moves from asking to being answered. Anad bha-ay dukh bhaagay: joy comes, and sorrow runs away.
When you are struggling, is it easy or hard for you to reach out a hand? What makes the difference?
